Apollo Astronaut Bill Anders Dies at 90

Legendary Photo of Earthrise

William Anders, the Apollo astronaut who captured the iconic "Earthrise" photo in 1968, has passed away at the age of 90.

First Manned Lunar Orbit

Anders was a member of the Apollo 8 mission, which became the first manned spacecraft to orbit the Moon. As the crew emerged from the far side of the Moon, Anders took the historic photograph that depicted the blue Earth rising over the barren lunar landscape.

Distinguished Career

Anders was born in 1933 and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Before joining NASA, he served in the Air Force as a pilot and an engineer. After Apollo 8, he went on to become a nuclear engineer and an environmental advocate.
